Science
At Comberbach Nursery and Primary School, we are passionate about providing a high-quality, engaging curriculum to allow all our children to excel in Science. We want our pupils to be able to explore and discover the world around them through practical, relevant experiences that stimulate curiosity.
In September 2018 we were awarded the Primary Science Quality Mark which celebrates a commitment to excellence in science teaching and learning. We are currently in the process of renewing this accolade for 2024. The Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM) is the only national award scheme to develop and celebrate the quality of science teaching and learning in primary schools. Schools achieve a PSQM award through a year-long process of the initial audit, followed by action and reflection. For more information please visit: www.psqm.org.uk
We have designed a broad and enriched curriculum which allows children to discover, explore, investigate and question. We ensure that children use a variety of enquiry strategies; that learning takes place inside and outside the classroom; and that children are challenged and learn to make cross-curricular links.
Our Ofsted inspection in January 2020 focused on the importance of progression in Science.
“Pupils revisit previous learning. Through practical work and visits to zoos and science museums, pupils gain an understanding of the world around them. Encouraging pupils to be inquisitive starts right from the early years. Children are encouraged to explore and to question in order to understand simple phenomena. In the Reception Class, children are able to use their knowledge to predict what factors will melt ice. Older pupils apply their mathematical skills well to calculations and graphs, such as when investigating the effect of exercise on heart rate.”
OFSTED 2020
Our pupils love science lessons, and enjoy two hours of quality Science learning each week. Children from Year 2 to Year 6 enjoy the responsibility of being Science Ambassadors. These children work with the Science Subject Leader to plan assemblies and events for the school, such as British Science Week. Last year, each year group completed a home-learning project based on their Science topic. We then welcomed families into school to showcase our learning in our Science Fayre. We also welcomed in visitors from Scientific professions and children engaged in workshops that brought their learning to life, making connections with the world around them.
After school clubs such as Mad Science and Little Explorers; visitors like The Explorer Dome and Molecular Marty from Fun Science; Forest Schools and trips to Jodrell Bank and Chester Zoo, all serve to enhance learning and help to develop enquiring minds. Our aim is to raise awareness, spark enthusiasm and equip our pupils with the knowledge and skills to become the scientists of tomorrow.
