PSHE and Citizenship

At Comberbach Nursery and Primary School, PSHE and Citizenship are so much more than just one of the subjects that we teach. It encompasses everything we do in and around the school each day; it shapes how we talk to each other and how we behave, and it ensures we continue to celebrate differences and accept people as the individuals they are.

PSHE is continually promoted in everyday school life through circle time, assemblies, School Council, specialist workshops, Road Safety Officers and coming soon – E-Cadets. We are also actively involved in the local community, with links to the local church, litter picking, and serving at ‘lite bites’.

Personal, Social, Health and Economic education (PSHE) and Citizenship is taught as a stand-alone subject through No Outsiders and Jigsaw. It is also integrated throughout the curriculum and school life at Comberbach Nursery and Primary School.

No Outsiders is a program that has been developed to help to teach children about equality and diversity through high-quality, age-appropriate texts. The program enables our children to understand the benefits that exist in a society where diversity and difference are celebrated.

Jigsaw is extremely well-structured, and progressive. It aims to prepare children for life, helping them really know and value who they truly are and understand how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world.

There are four key themes that are taught each year: Personal (keeping safe, online safety, self-esteem, growing and changing and aspirations), Health (physical wellbeing, mental health, sex and relationships and drug education), Social(families, friendships, safe relationships, managing hurtful behaviour and equality) and Citizenship (communities, shared responsibilities, human rights, economic wellbeing and sustainability).
